Capture grammar

Everything Billine understands in a capture line, from projects and labels to dates, estimates, repeats and reminders.

Contents
Reference

Type a task the way you’d say it. Billine picks out the words it recognises, shows each one as a chip under the line, and saves the rest as the title.

pay rent /home tomorrow 9am ~15m

Saved as pay rent

  • home
  • Tomorrow
  • 9:00 AM
  • 15m

You can write the pieces in any order, and leave out any of them. A line with none of them is just a title, and it goes to the Inbox.

Tip

In the app, tap ? in any capture field to open What you can type, the short version of this page. Tapping an example puts it in the field so you can see the chips it makes.

Where it goes

Type What Billine does Examples
/project Files the task under that project, and makes the project if it’s new. /home, /2026-taxes
#label Adds a label. As many as you like. #bills, #deep-work

Project names are matched without caring about capitals. Slash dates like 29/8 are dates, not projects, and an email address is never read as a label.

When

Billine keeps two dates apart: the do-date, the day you mean to work on it, and the deadline, what somebody else is expecting. You can type both in one line.

Type What Billine does Examples
A day Sets the do-date. today, tomorrow, tonight, friday, fri, next friday, next week, next month, in 3 days, 12 Sep, Sep 12, 3/9
An hour Sets the time. With no day beside it, that means today. 9am, at 9:30 pm, 16:00
by or due and a day Sets the deadline. by friday, due 1 Oct, by 29/8
  • Slash dates are day first: 3/9 is the 3rd of September.
  • tonight means today at 7:00 PM.
  • next friday always skips this week’s Friday; friday is the coming one.
  • A month name on its own, with no day, is left in the title.

How long

Type What Billine does Examples
~ and a length Sets the estimate, which is what Today’s capacity track measures. ~15m, ~90m, ~2h, ~1.5h

Repeats

Type What Billine does Examples
every and a pattern Makes the task repeat. every day, every weekday, every monday, every other week, every 3 days, every month, every 1st and 15th, every end of the month, every quarter, every year
after completion Counts from the day you finish it, not from the calendar. These never pile up. every 3 days after completion

If you miss a few, a daily or weekday repeat skips the missed ones, the way a habit should. Everything else stacks them, the way a bill should. You can change that, and everything else about a repeat, in the task’s Repeat and remind section.

pay rent /home every 1st and 15th ~5m

Saved as pay rent

  • home
  • Every month on the 1st and 15th
  • 5m

Reminders

Type What Billine does Examples
remind me and an hour Adds a reminder. remind me at 15:45, remind me tomorrow at 9am, remind me thursday at 8:30

A reminder needs an hour: remind me tomorrow on its own sets nothing and stays in the title. With no day, it rings on the task’s do-date, or today if it has none.

file taxes by friday remind me thursday at 8:30

Saved as file taxes

  • Friday
  • Thursday, 8:30 AM

Committing to today

Type What Billine does Example
!today Puts the task above the fold on Today, now. It’s the only piece that’s a decision rather than a fact. !today ship the deck ~45m
!today ship the deck ~45m

Saved as ship the deck

  • Committed today
  • 45m

An exclamation mark typed for emphasis, as in call mum today!, sets the date but never commits the task.

Typing in Spanish

Billine reads capture lines in one language at a time. It starts in your device’s language when that’s English or Spanish, and in English otherwise. To change it, go to Settings › Capture. That’s separate from the language the app is in.

In Spanish the same line reads like this, and accents are optional (manana works too):

Pagar el alquiler /casa #recibos mañana a las 9am ~15m cada mes

Saved as Pagar el alquiler

  • casa
  • #recibos
  • Mañana
  • 9:00 a.m.
  • 15m
  • Cada mes

The Spanish page of this guide has the full list.

What Billine doesn’t read

  • @ does nothing yet. It’s kept for places.
  • Priorities. Billine has none; what matters goes above the fold.
  • A reminder without an hour, like remind me tomorrow.
  • A month without a day, like in September.
